How does xbox live time work?

Im considering getting xbox live, but im a teen and pretty poor. I want to be able to afford xbox live, so i have one question; Does the time cards expire on their own, or is it a pay as you go thing. I assumed they last from one date to another, but my cousins told me that they could by a year card and itd last like forever. which is it? if its pay as you go, i can easily pay for live, but paying month by month is different…

You buy time periods. There are 1 month, 3 months, and 12 months.

It’s cheapest to get 12 months since it’s only 50 bucks a year. It’s 7.99 per month if you want to pay month by month. It’s 19.99 for 3 months.

The time period starts as soon as you enter the code. So if you were to buy a 1 year code and you enter the code today, it’s good for a year. Even if you don’t play for a month, the clock still ticks.
